Iran Demands Response After Ukraine Drone Attack on Merchant Ship Kills Crewman

Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, declared on Tuesday that Ukraine's drone attack on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea "cannot go unanswered." The incident, which occurred in the Caspian Sea, caused an explosion, killing one crew member and injuring another, according to Iranian officials.

Araqchi conveyed this stance following calls with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov, in a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed condolences for the crew member's death and acknowledged Araqchi's gratitude for assistance provided by local authorities in Russia's Astrakhan region, where the ship had departed. Araqchi stressed the necessity of halting such "adventurous actions" by the Kyiv regime.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously stated on social media that Ukrainian armed forces had achieved "very fruitful results" with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, hitting vessels involved in transporting Iranian military cargo, as well as a warship. Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) specified on Telegram that the drone attack targeted a cargo ship under international sanctions, allegedly used for transporting military goods between Iran and Russia.
