Iran Denies Seeking Regional Escalation, Vows to Defend Security Interests

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted on Monday that Tehran has no intention of increasing regional tensions or instability, but will vigorously defend its security, national interests, and territorial integrity. "The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek to escalate tensions or instability in the region. However, it will act with its full capabilities to defend the country's security, national interests, and territorial integrity," Pezeshkian stated, according to Press TV.

These remarks come amid a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The situation has been volatile following a series of military confrontations involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. This escalation began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, which were met with retaliatory attacks by Iran targeting several regional countries. Although Washington and Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire in April and signed a memorandum of understanding in June, mediated by Pakistan, the arrangement collapsed last month. This collapse led to nearly two weeks of renewed exchanges of attacks between the two sides.

Adding another layer to regional diplomacy, President Pezeshkian held a phone conversation with the newly elected Hamas leader, Khalil al-Hayya. They discussed developments concerning Palestine, specifically the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. According to a Hamas statement, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their rights. He also congratulated Hayya on his new leadership role within the group.

During the call, al-Hayya emphasized the Palestinian people's commitment to securing their rights through legitimate means and expressed hope for an end to attacks on Iran, seeking a return of security and stability across the region. This conversation occurred shortly after the release of a draft agreement by the Board of Peace, which outlines principles for the next phase of US President Donald Trump's Gaza plan, including security arrangements and a proposed political pathway for the enclave.
