Iran executes two men convicted of spying for Israel

Iran executed two men on Monday who were convicted of spying for Israel, the judiciary announced. The judiciary's Mizan news outlet identified the men as Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat. They were reportedly hanged for transmitting the coordinates of sensitive military and security sites to Mossad agents, Israel's foreign intelligence service. Mizan stated the men "helped the intelligence services achieve their objectives by providing them with information on military and security centres during the war." The report did not specify when the men were arrested or tried, only that they were convicted of "espionage and collaboration with the Zionist regime." Iran has significantly increased its executions since the war with Israel and the United States began in February. Many of those executed are accused of spying for Israeli intelligence. Iran is the world's second-highest executioner after China, with rights groups reporting at least 1,639 people executed last year, a record high since 1989.
