Iran's Supreme Leader replaces top military brass amid ongoing war

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has undertaken a significant shake-up of the country's military leadership, appointing six new high-ranking officials. This move comes just a day after Khamenei named a new national security chief and occurs within the context of a nearly six-month-old war involving the United States and Israel.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the role of Supreme Leader on March 8 following his father's assassination, announced the appointments via social media. Ali Abdolahi is the new chief of staff of the Armed Forces, replacing Abdolrahim Musavi, who was killed on February 28, the first day of the war. Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed commander-in-chief of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), taking over from Mohamad Pakpur, who was also killed at the conflict's outset.

Further appointments include Kiumars Heydari as deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces and Mustafa Izadi as deputy commander of the IRGC. Ali Azmaei will now lead the IRGC's Navy, succeeding Alireza Tangsiri, who died in a U.S.-Israeli attack in late March. Hossein Taeb has been placed in charge of the Basij militia, an influential paramilitary volunteer force with four million members across various societal sectors.

In his announcement, Khamenei stated that the objective behind these appointments is to "prepare timely, revolutionary, and effective responses to any level and type of conventional or modern threats, whether military, cognitive, or hybrid, against the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran." The new leadership takes control of Iran's military and security apparatus during a critical period marked by ongoing hostilities.
