Iran says draft deal with US would reopen Hormuz shipping, end naval blockade

Iran's state television has reported the existence of a draft framework for an initial, unofficial memorandum of understanding with the United States aimed at ending their ongoing conflict. This potential agreement, if finalized, could significantly alter the dynamics in the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding region.

Under the terms of the reported framework, Iran would be expected to restore commercial shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within one month. In return, the United States would withdraw its military forces from Iran's vicinity and lift a naval blockade that has impacted regional maritime traffic. The framework reportedly excludes military vessels.

While the draft proposes Iran managing ship traffic through the strait in cooperation with Oman, state TV emphasized that the agreement is not yet finalized. Tehran has stated it will not take any steps without "tangible verification" of the U.S. commitments. If a final agreement is reached within 60 days, it could be approved as a binding UN Security Council resolution.

The emerging U.S.-Iran MoU reportedly stems from indirect talks initiated after the war began in February, with Pakistan playing a central mediating role. The conflict escalated earlier this year with missile and drone exchanges between Iran and Israel, disrupting shipping in the Gulf and drawing in U.S. military involvement, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
