Iran sets conditions for US to reopen Strait of Hormuz, including Gaza war end

Iran has laid out specific conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to the United States, utilizing intermediaries to convey its demands. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, stated on Tuesday that the U.S. must agree to end the war in Gaza as part of these conditions.

Rezaei further specified that Iran's demands also include the release of frozen Iranian assets and a complete cessation of hostilities across the entire region, encompassing conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza. These terms, along with others, have been formally communicated to the U.S. via a mediator, according to Iran's Press TV.

The situation follows a period of heightened tension and military actions. On June 18, Tehran and Washington had reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding to end a conflict that began on February 28. However, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that the agreed-upon ceasefire was no longer in effect, leading to subsequent U.S. strikes on Iranian targets.

CENTCOM claimed these strikes were a response to Iran's actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated by targeting U.S. bases in the Middle East. On July 12, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz until U.S. intervention in the region ceased, following a new wave of reciprocal attacks. The following day, Trump declared the U.S. would act as the "keeper" of the Strait of Hormuz and reimpose a blockade on Iranian ports.
