Iran War, Trump Tariffs Drive Up U.S. Living Costs, Fueling Inflation Fears

The ongoing conflict in Iran and former President Donald Trump's global tariff policies are significantly increasing the cost of living for Americans, raising concerns about new inflationary pressures. Gasoline prices have climbed back to $4.10 per gallon, with expectations of further increases due to rising global crude oil prices.

Brent crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel this week for the first time in two months, following reports of attacks on at least two oil tankers in the Red Sea. This surge in fuel prices is impacting financial markets, reigniting worries about renewed inflation, despite the U.S. inflation rate falling to 3.5% last month. The yield on U.S. Treasury bonds, a key indicator of inflation expectations, has also risen, with the 10-year government bond yield nearing 4.7%, its highest level since January 2025.

These rising prices and interest rates are placing renewed pressure on U.S. consumers. The average interest rate for a 30-year mortgage reached 6.85% on Thursday, the highest since June 2025, before slightly declining to 6.81% on Friday. Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly downplayed the impact of the conflict on American households, even as his administration pursues a broad tariff agenda.

Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody's Analytics, told NBC News that the war in Iran is costing the average U.S. household over $1,200 annually. "The cost of the Iran war is placing a significant strain on American household budgets and is expected to have a more pronounced effect as the war continues, fuel prices rise, and military costs increase," Zandi stated.
