Irish government defends new jet's capability amid landing concerns

The Irish government has asserted that its new €53 million government jet is fully operational, pushing back against reports suggesting it may have landing difficulties in adverse weather conditions. The controversy stems from the aircraft's purchase without a key navigation system, the FalconEye, which aids in landing during low visibility. This system was omitted because it is manufactured by an Israeli firm, a decision influenced by a 2024 government policy to avoid awarding defense contracts to Israeli companies following an International Court of Justice advisory opinion.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Jack Chambers addressed the issue, confirming he had sought clarification from the Department of Defence. He stated that the department's assessment found no limitations on the aircraft's operational capability. "The Department of Defence have informed me that there are no limitations on the aircraft's operational capability and it can conduct its full range of missions. That's what they've stated in the context of the aircraft that has been procured. Full operational capability is their clear position on that," Chambers said.

The Falcon 6X, completed last year at a Dassault Aviation facility in the US, is primarily used for transporting the Taoiseach and senior ministers and is operated by the Air Corps. The jet features a high-end interior with executive-style seating, wood paneling, cabin tables, and sofa-style seating, including a galley area and private washroom facilities. The initial reports about the aircraft's capabilities have garnered international attention.
