Islamic groups protest liquor factory in Bandung, demand closure

Dozens of members from Islamic organizations protested outside a liquor factory in Bandung, West Java, on Friday, demanding its closure. The demonstrators cited a recent incident at a music festival where they claim Quranic verses were used in a challenge involving alcoholic beverages, which they consider an offense to their religion.

The factory, identified as PT Adi Makmur Sentosa, a distributor of the Newport brand of liquor, was the target of the protest. Protesters gathered in front of the facility, which was heavily guarded by police and appeared to be closed for operations. Members of the group attempted to enter the factory to ensure it was shut down, leading to a tense confrontation with the police.

Hendy Noviandy, head of the Islamic Brotherhood Advocates, stated that the protest aimed to hold PT Adi Makmur Sentosa accountable for the alleged religious offense. He condemned any actions that use the Quran as promotional material for alcoholic drinks and called for action against those involved. "We demand that all relevant parties stop and not repeat any form of promotion of alcoholic beverages that uses or links symbols, holy verses, or religious identity because such actions are unconstitutional," he said.

The group plans to meet with the mayor to discuss legal enforcement, specifically referencing Bandung City Regulation No. 10 of 2024 concerning the control and supervision of alcoholic beverages. They expressed a desire to protect the younger generation from the impact of liquor consumption.
