Islamic New Year: Kwara declares Tuesday public holiday

The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to commemorate the 1448 Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah. This observance marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and the first day of Muharram. The announcement was made on Monday through a statement by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju.

The government encouraged Muslim faithful in Kwara State and beyond to use the occasion for reflection on the broader significance of the Hijrah. The statement highlighted the event's relevance to peaceful coexistence, noting that "Hijrah (the migration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad) reminds the world of the evergreen value of tolerance, common humanity, and the right of every person to their legitimate aspirations, either in matters of faith or mundane matters as long as they do not hurt others."

Hijrah celebrations in Islam symbolize resilience, faith, and renewal, serving as a time for Muslims to reflect on moral conduct, spiritual growth, and the lessons of sacrifice and unity represented by Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah.
