Israel launches major military operation in West Bank after deadly violence

Israel launched an extensive military operation across the West Bank on Friday in response to a significant escalation of violence that claimed the lives of multiple individuals on both sides.

The operation was reportedly triggered by the death of an Israeli settler, which ignited a wave of confrontations. Palestinian health officials stated that Israeli soldiers shot and killed four Palestinians in the northern West Bank village of Tell. The Israeli military, in turn, confirmed the deaths of two soldiers, including one who was a settler and part of a local defense squad.

Authorities reported that two other Israelis and four Palestinians sustained injuries during the clashes. The Israeli military announced its preparation for a "comprehensive" counter-terrorism operation, including a search for Palestinians suspected of attacking Israelis. Two individuals were apprehended during a raid in Nablus.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a joint statement with Defense Minister Israel Katz, called for increased troop deployment in the West Bank. He also advocated for the demolition of homes belonging to those accused in Tell, the confiscation of weapons, and the revocation of work permits in the village. "Security forces must be allowed to act freely and with full force against terrorism," they stated.

Human rights group B'Tselem expressed concern that the violence could spiral out of control, particularly as Israeli settlers and soldiers were reportedly gathering near several Palestinian cities. Yuli Novak, the group's executive director, warned that "Israeli violence is spreading throughout the West Bank, fueled by Israeli politicians openly calling for revenge." She added, "We know where this leads. Millions of Palestinians are now completely exposed to further attacks, with no one to protect them."
