Russian warship conducts live-fire drills in English Channel after UK's support for Ukraine

A Russian warship carried out live-fire exercises in the English Channel on Monday, approximately 75 kilometers off the coast of Plymouth. The "unusual" nature of the drills, as described by British media, sparked some alarm in the United Kingdom. This naval demonstration coincided with the recent pledge of "100%" support for Ukraine from the newly appointed British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

The UK's Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Royal Navy closely monitored the Russian vessel throughout the operation. A spokesperson stated, "The Royal Navy monitored the exercise, continues to closely follow the ship's activity, and is prepared to protect the security of the United Kingdom."

According to British authorities, the Russian warship had previously notified the patrol vessel HMS Tyne, which was in the area, of its intention to conduct live firing. The Russian vessel requested that the British ship move to a safe distance before the approximately thirty-minute maneuvers began.

The incident is particularly noteworthy because such exercises are uncommon in the English Channel. The Guardian newspaper labeled the drills as "unusual," especially given the rising Russian military activity near British waters and in Northern Europe. This display of force occurred just a month after a previous escalation in the same waters, when British special forces intercepted the sanctioned tanker Smyrtos, part of Russia's "ghost fleet" used to circumvent Western sanctions on oil exports.
