Israeli strikes kill at least eight in Gaza

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City early Thursday morning killed at least eight Palestinians, a spokesman for the civil defense agency in the territory reported. Seven individuals died in strikes targeting residential buildings, while another person was killed in the Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City.

Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City confirmed it received 15 wounded individuals from the attacks. These strikes occurred amidst ongoing violence, even though a truce technically began in October. The Palestinian territory's health ministry, operating under Hamas authority, stated that at least 936 people have been killed since the ceasefire started, figures considered reliable by the UN.

Both Hamas and Israel have accused each other of violating the ceasefire terms. The initial phase of the truce involved the exchange of Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinians detained by Israel. However, the transition to a second phase, which was meant to include Hamas's disarmament and a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal, has been stalled for months.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced orders for the military to take control of 70% of Gaza. The recent strikes follow the killing of the latest head of Hamas's armed wing in Gaza, Mohammed Odeh, in an Israeli strike last week, a month after his predecessor met the same fate.
