Istana Budaya reopens Panggung Sari theater, launching 2026 performance season

Istana Budaya, Malaysia's national cultural venue, has officially reopened its Panggung Sari theater, now designated as the National Theater of Malaysia. The relaunch, marked by the launch of the Istana Budaya Program 2026, coincides with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and aims to invigorate the nation's performing arts scene.

The theater had been closed since January 2024 for significant roof repairs and upgrades by the Public Works Department. Its reopening signifies Istana Budaya's readiness to adapt to the dynamic performing arts industry, moving beyond its architectural and historical significance to embrace technical capabilities, production management, safety standards, and infrastructure for large-scale international productions.

For 2026, Istana Budaya has planned five of its own productions, including "Laman Santai Seni Budaya: 2 Dekad" and the musical "Pengembaraan Sang Kancil." Additionally, Panggung Sari will host a robust lineup of external productions. These include performances by Douglas Lim, L. Shankar, a musical adaptation of "Mansur & Liu," a concert by Sumayyah Hijjaz, "Bangsawan Diraja Beting Beras Basah II," "Four Generations In One House," the 35th Malaysia Film Festival, M. Nasir's "Magnum Opus M. Nasir Dekad Ke-5," "RUMI 819: Souls Across Civilizations," and "Legenda Puteri Santubong."

Two events have already taken place: "Laman Santai Seni Budaya: 2 Dekad" on July 4, 2026, and a Malaysia-Thailand concert with the National Symphony Orchestra on July 11-12, 2026. These events underscore the commitment of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) and Istana Budaya to promoting cultural exchange and artistic excellence.
