Istanbul braces for heavy rain and strong winds

Istanbul residents should prepare for a shift in weather as heavy rainfall is forecast for Friday, June 20, 2026. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has issued a weekly forecast predicting scattered showers and thunderstorms on Friday, with temperatures expected to drop to 26°C.

Throughout the week, from June 17 to June 22, the city will largely experience sunny to partly cloudy skies, with temperatures hovering between 26°C and 30°C. However, a significant warning has been issued regarding strong winds. Northwesterly winds, known locally as "Poyraz," are expected to intensify from this evening and blow intermittently at storm force (30-60 km/s) throughout the week.

AKOM's report highlights the potential severity of these winds, urging citizens to be cautious and take necessary precautions. While most days are predicted to be dry, the combination of strong winds and the expected rainfall on Friday necessitates preparedness. The forecast indicates that Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday will be mostly clear, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 30°C, and no precipitation expected on these days.
