Istra 1961 speaks out after two matches marred by controversial calls

Croatian football club Istra 1961 has publicly voiced strong criticism regarding the refereeing in their opening two matches of the new league season. The team, currently with one point, believes they should have had a better standing, citing what they describe as "obvious refereeing errors."

In their first match against Lokomotiva, Istra 1961 had a regular goal disallowed in the first half while the score was tied 1-1. The following game saw them denied what they consider a clear penalty opportunity when a Hajduk defender allegedly struck an Istra attacker in the head with an elbow during a jump. The club feels these decisions directly impacted the course and outcome of the games.

"We are aware that refereeing mistakes are part of football," the club stated in a release. "However, when such decisions directly affect the flow and final result of matches, and when a football game becomes a platform for discussing refereeing decisions and standards, we consider it justified to express concern and publicly question the uniformity of the refereeing standard."

Istra 1961 emphasized their demand for equal treatment, stating, "We do not seek preferential treatment nor do we want to seek excuses for mistakes. We only ask for an equal criterion and conditions in which the result will primarily depend on what the teams have shown on the field." The club hopes that refereeing standards will become more uniform as the season progresses, allowing discussions to focus on the players' actions rather than controversial calls.
