Itaipú's Monumental Illumination show to go dark for a year for LED upgrade

Itaipú Binacional has staged the final presentation of its "Iluminación Monumental" (Monumental Illumination) show, marking the beginning of an estimated one-year pause for a comprehensive system overhaul. This iconic spectacle of lights and sounds, a significant attraction since 2005, has drawn more than 800,000 visitors to the Itaipú dam's Left Bank.

The decision to modernize stems from the unavailability of spare parts for the aging metal-vapor lamps. The project involves replacing the existing 829 light points with state-of-the-art LED technology, while preserving the original design's essence. This upgrade will enable quicker changes in light colors and intensity, moving away from the manual lamp replacements previously required for color adjustments.

With the new LED system, light shows can be programmed directly from a control console, opening possibilities for more dynamic and personalized presentations in the future. Since its inception in 2005, the "Iluminación Monumental" has been a key nocturnal attraction on the border, diversifying the tourist offerings and enhancing the image of the Itaipú Tourist Complex (CTI).

Diana Centurión, Itaipú's advisor for Tourism, stated that the "integral technical renovation" is necessary to offer the public a new experience and further boost border tourism. Following its projected reopening in 2027, the show's frequency is expected to increase from two to five days per week. However, the official announcement did not disclose the investment cost or the identity of the company contracted for the conversion work.
