Italian Football Federation withdraws support for Infantino's FIFA re-election bid

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has officially announced its withdrawal of support for Gianni Infantino's bid to be re-elected as FIFA president in 2027. This decision signals a clear stance from the FIGC, aligning itself with UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin.

The federation cited "recent initiatives by the FIFA president regarding governance and the development of the international calendar and competitions" as the reason for its decision. The FIGC stated its commitment to working with UEFA and other European federations to promote a vision of football centered on merit, solidarity, sustainability, and fan centrality.

Giovanni Malagò, president of the FIGC, emphasized his support for a model of "dialogue, listening, and co-responsibility" that has fostered football's growth and innovation. This move follows controversy surrounding Infantino's plan to sell a stake in World Cup rights to private investors, a plan he was ultimately forced to withdraw.

Italy is not alone in this stance; federations from England, Scotland, Denmark, and New Zealand have also withdrawn their support for the Swiss official. Meanwhile, UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF have also called for Infantino's resignation over the failed attempt to bring private investment into FIFA competitions. In contrast, CONMEBOL and CAF, along with football legends like Cafu and Roberto Carlos, have publicly backed Infantino.
