A stroke of luck turned into a frantic search for a woman in southern Italy who accidentally discarded a winning lottery ticket worth 1 million euros. The fortunate ticket, featuring her usual numbers 2, 4, 8, 10, and 51, was mistakenly thrown away after she misunderstood a notification at the lottery retailer.

We recreated the path the ticket followed, but we didn't have much hope of finding it since it had already been picked up by a garbage truck.

Believing the ticket was a non-winner due to a system alert indicating the prize was too large for the retailer to pay, she disposed of it. The realization of her mistake came later when a family member pointed out that her chosen numbers had indeed won the jackpot. Her return to the shop revealed that the trash had already been collected.

In a remarkable turn of events, sanitation workers from SANB, the local waste management company, embarked on a two-day search through tons of garbage. Their diligent efforts paid off when they located the ticket, remarkably intact amidst other damaged slips, inside a plastic bag. The recovery was described as miraculous, especially since it was a Sunday, and the load had not yet reached the landfill.
