Italy crowned U-17 European champions after penalty shootout win over Belgium

The Italian U-17 national team has been crowned European champions, securing their second title after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Belgium. The final match, held on Sunday, ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, with Italy ultimately prevailing 4-3 from the spot.

Belgium appeared to be on the verge of victory when Noa Ojea scored in the 85th minute. However, the 'Azzurrini,' demonstrating characteristic Italian competitive spirit, fought back. In stoppage time, Marcello Fugazzola converted a penalty, awarded after Xander Dierckx handled the ball in the box, to force the match into extra time.

The penalty shootout saw Italian goalkeeper Christian Lupo emerge as the hero. Lupo, who had been instrumental in Italy's semi-final win against Spain by saving three penalties, once again showcased his prowess. He stopped Belgium's fourth penalty, taken by Ojea, who had scored the late equalizer in regular time.

Despite Edoardo Rocca missing Italy's subsequent penalty, bringing Belgium back into contention at 3-3, the fate of the championship was sealed on the final kick. Belgium's Tinus Moorthamer struck the crossbar, giving Italy's Diego Perillo the chance to win the title. Perillo calmly slotted home a powerful and precise shot, securing the 4-3 victory and the championship for Italy, their second U-17 European title after their triumph in 2024.
