Jakarta Governor Asks Security Guard Not Be Fired After Confronting Red-Light Running Driver

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has intervened in a viral incident, requesting that the security guard who confronted a driver for running a red light not be dismissed from his job. The dispute occurred at the HI Roundabout, a busy intersection in Central Jakarta, where a Toyota Alphard was seen accelerating through a red light, endangering pedestrians who had the right of way.

The security guard on duty approached the Alphard and tapped its body as a form of reprimand, which escalated into a verbal altercation. Videos circulating on social media depicted individuals from the car allegedly intimidating the security guard. Baswedan stated that the Alphard driver violated traffic rules and that the vehicle's license plate might be fake, indicating the driver should face sanctions.

So, in my opinion, the driver must be given sanctions. And I have asked law enforcement officials, if this cannot be resolved amicably, then of course, the one who acts as if they have power, even though they are wrong, must be given sanctions.

However, the situation has since been mediated by the Menteng Sector Police. Police Chief Commissioner Braiel Arnold Rondonuwu confirmed that the security guard and the Alphard driver reached a mutual agreement to forgive each other on Thursday, July 23. While the police are continuing their investigation into the alleged intimidation, no specific evidence has yet been found.
