Jakarta Governor Inaugurates Betawi Cultural Council to Boost Preservation Efforts

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has officially inaugurated the Betawi Customary and Cultural Council, marking a significant step in the preservation and development of the region's indigenous culture. The council, now led by prominent Betawi figure and former Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, aims to provide a more structured approach to cultural initiatives.

"The issue of the Betawi Customary Institution, which has been unresolved for so long, is now settled," stated Governor Anung during the inauguration ceremony at the DKI Jakarta City Hall. He emphasized that the council's formation aligns with legal frameworks, referencing Law Number 2 of 2024, ensuring its legitimacy and operational basis.

The provincial government pledges to be a strategic partner in advancing Betawi culture, particularly as Jakarta approaches its 500th anniversary in 2027. Governor Anung announced plans to compile a book detailing Betawi heritage as part of efforts to reinforce Jakarta's cultural identity. This initiative underscores a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the unique traditions of the Betawi people.

Fauzi Bowo expressed gratitude for the support received during the council's formation. He acknowledged the complexities and dynamics involved in unifying various Betawi organizations and communities. "We know this is not an easy task, the dynamics that had to be experienced, even during Governor Pramono Anung's term, the dynamics were extraordinary," Bowo remarked, praising the governor's patience in guiding the diverse Betawi community towards establishing their cultural institution.
