Jakarta High Court Raises Ibam’s Chromebook Corruption Sentence to Five Years

The DKI Jakarta High Court has increased the prison sentence for former Education Ministry technology consultant Ibrahim Arief, also known as Ibam, from four years to five years in the Chromebook corruption case.

Chief Judge Catur Irianto said the appeals panel considered the original sentence insufficiently appropriate and unfair in relation to Ibam’s level of wrongdoing and the aims of punishment. The ruling changed the main sentence and additional compensation ordered by the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on May 12, 2026.

The court left the fine at 500 million rupiah. If unpaid, it will be replaced by 140 days in prison, compared with 120 days under the earlier ruling. The appeals panel also ordered Ibam to pay 5 billion rupiah in compensation, or serve four additional years in prison.

We accept the appeal requests from the public prosecutor and the defendant’s lawyers. We amend the ruling of the Central Jakarta District Court’s Corruption Court dated May 12, 2026, concerning the principal sentence and additional compensation.

The judges cited his conduct as a factor supporting leniency, noting that he behaved politely during proceedings, had no previous convictions and had family dependants. They also said his actions did not support the government’s anti-corruption program.

The case concerns the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management services for an education digitalization program at the ministry from 2019 to 2022. Ibam was found guilty under Indonesia’s anti-corruption law and provisions on joint participation. The procurement allegedly failed to comply with planning and procurement principles and contributed to total state losses of 5.26 trillion rupiah in the case.
