Jakarta Optimizes Waste Processing Facilities to Reduce Landfill Burden

Jakarta is intensifying its efforts to manage the city's mounting waste problem through the optimization of its Waste Processing Facilities Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS3R) sites. The Menteng Atas TPS3R, a key facility in this initiative, is capable of processing up to 100 tons of waste per day when operating at full capacity.

This program is a strategic move by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to significantly reduce the amount of waste being transported to the final disposal site in Bantar Gebang. Each TPS3R facility is designed to decrease the daily waste volume sent to Bantar Gebang by an estimated 25 to 50 tons.

Currently, Jakarta has approximately 31 TPS3R facilities in operation. However, not all of them are functioning optimally. The provincial government's focus on optimizing these sites is part of a broader strategy to enhance community-based waste management and lessen the burden on the city's main landfill.

The TPS3R system processes waste through sorting, shredding, and further treatment. This allows for the recovery and reuse of materials that still hold value, contributing to a more circular economy and reducing the overall environmental impact of waste disposal.
