Jamaica opposition welcomes PM's visit to displaced families, demands lasting action

Lothan Cousins, Opposition Spokesperson on Land, has welcomed Prime Minister Andrew Holness's visit to Cooper's Pen in Trelawny, where approximately 20 families were left homeless following the demolition of their homes on August 11. Cousins expressed happiness that their advocacy efforts have led to government attention and anticipates a swift resolution for the affected residents.

"We welcome the Government's visit to the community," Cousins stated. "After weeks of uncertainty, we are happy that our strident advocacy has borne fruit, and we look forward to a speedy resolution of the matter in favour of the residents." He highlighted that around 40 families have been impacted by the demolitions, with many still without permanent shelter as the hurricane season continues.

The People's National Party (PNP) has consistently called on the government to invoke Section 4 of the Local Communities Amenities Improvement Act. This measure, previously used in Red Hills in 2016, would protect remaining homes and provide displaced individuals with dignified, lasting housing solutions, rather than temporary tents. Cousins thanked Dennis Meadows, PNP constituency chairman for Northern Trelawny, and Councillor Garth Wilkinson of the Falmouth Division for their support to the residents.

The opposition emphasizes the need for concrete actions and lasting solutions to address the plight of the displaced families in Cooper's Pen.
