Japan's Crown Prince honors 90 years of immigration to Paraguay

Crown Prince Akishino of Japan and Princess Kiko marked the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Paraguay with a visit that underscored the enduring ties between the two nations. The royal couple participated in the central commemoration ceremony at the Conmebol Convention Center, beginning with a solemn floral offering to honor the first Japanese immigrants who settled in the "land of the Guarani."

The event also featured an exhibition showcasing agricultural and livestock products from Japanese colonies across Paraguay, alongside a poignant display of black-and-white photographs depicting the journey and early life of these pioneers. These images evoked strong emotions among attendees, many of whom recognized their ancestors.

During the ceremony, Prince Akishino delivered a speech in Japanese, translated for the audience, emphasizing cooperation between Japan and Paraguay. He expressed "sincere respect to all the Japanese immigrants who put down their roots in this Guarani land," drawing a warm applause. He recalled his previous visit 20 years prior for the 70th anniversary, remembering the "warm welcome" he received.

The couple also showed keen interest in Paraguayan handicrafts, particularly the production of "ao po'i" fabric, before attending a luncheon. Their visit served as a significant moment to celebrate the contributions of the Japanese community and reinforce bilateral relations.
