Japanese Hip-Hop Star Awich Joins Netflix Dating Show, Shares Dramatic Life Story

Renowned Japanese hip-hop artist Awich is stepping into a new role as a host for the second season of Netflix's reality dating show, "Is Love Blind? Japan." The show, now set in Okinawa, features Awich alongside returning hosts MEGUMI and Nagano, adding a fresh dynamic to the popular series.

Awich, whose real name is Akiko Urasaki, has a life story as dramatic as any film. She met her American husband while living in the United States, and they had a daughter. During her pregnancy, her husband was incarcerated. After his release, their plans to move back to Okinawa were tragically cut short when he was shot and killed on the street in 2011. Awich, in her early twenties at the time, became a single mother.

Recounting the harrowing experience, Awich described hearing gunshots from her home and crawling to protect her infant daughter. Despite the immense grief and self-doubt that followed, she found strength in her late husband's encouragement to "keep singing." This resilience fueled her return to music, leading her to release her first full-length album and forge her own path in the hip-hop world.

Born in Okinawa, Awich discovered her passion for hip-hop at age 13. She participated in Okinawa hip-hop compilations and released an EP before pursuing a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship and marketing in Atlanta, Georgia. Her debut album, "Asia Wish Child," was released in 2007. Now, at 39, she brings her unique perspective and powerful life experiences to the dating show, connecting with viewers on a deeper level.
