Jashore Fisheries Sector Suffers Tk 55 Crore Loss from Flooding

Jashore's fisheries sector has suffered an estimated loss of Tk 55.03 crore due to persistent heavy rainfall and waterlogging, impacting over 2,600 ponds and numerous fish enclosures. The District Fisheries Office reported that the adverse weather conditions led to significant damage across eight upazilas.

According to the department's initial assessment, 2,097 ponds and other water bodies, along with 504 fish enclosures, were affected. This resulted in the loss of approximately 2,137 tonnes of fish, 48 tonnes of shrimp, and millions of fish and shrimp fry. The estimated losses include Tk 49.89 crore from fish and shrimp and Tk 5.11 crore from damage to fisheries infrastructure.

Monirampur upazila recorded the highest losses at Tk 18.61 crore, followed closely by Abhaynagar with Tk 17.07 crore. Other affected areas include Jashore Sadar, Jhikargachha, Keshabpur, Sharsha, Bagharpara, and Chaugachha, with varying degrees of financial impact.

Strong currents during the heavy rainfall washed away fish from ponds and enclosures, and fish hatcheries also sustained considerable damage. The damage assessment report has been submitted to the divisional office for further action by the relevant ministry.
