Javed Hashmi, Sons-in-Law Booked by Multan Police for Alleged Electricity Theft

Veteran Pakistani politician Javed Hashmi and his three sons-in-law face legal action after being booked by Multan police for alleged electricity theft. Four separate First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged against them at the Makhdoom Rasheed Police Station on July 17.

The cases were registered against Hashmi and his sons-in-law, Shahid Bahar, Zahid, and Shahzeb, under Section 462J of the Pakistan Penal Code. This section pertains to the interference, improper use, or tampering with electric meters by consumers.

According to the FIRs, filed at the complaint of Mohammad Bilal, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) for the Multan Electric Power Company Limited (Mepco), the politician and his relatives were accused of stealing electricity. Mepco's team reportedly found evidence of tampering, specifically "inserting a loop in the terminal of the company’s power meter" to facilitate the theft.
