JB hotels gearing up for F1 bonanza with Bahrain GP in Sepang and Singapore GP held back to back

Hotels in Johor Bahru are preparing for a potential influx of Formula One fans as the Singapore Grand Prix approaches. Travelers are expected to seek more affordable accommodation outside Singapore, where hotel rates typically skyrocket during the event.

While bookings directly linked to the Singapore Grand Prix (Oct. 9-11) have not yet surged, hoteliers anticipate demand to build as the race draws nearer. Johor's close proximity to Singapore and the availability of cross-border transport make it an appealing option for fans looking to reduce costs.

In fact, a few of my friends from London and Australia have told me they will be staying in Johor Bahru to watch the Singapore Grand Prix as they are still waiting for tickets for the race in Sepang.

Jimmy Leong, chairman of the Johor Tourist Guides Association, noted that the state's tourism sector could receive a significant boost from the rare back-to-back Formula One racing window, which includes the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang (Oct. 2-4). He mentioned that international friends from London and Australia plan to stay in Johor Bahru for the Singapore race, while also hoping for tickets to Sepang.

Ivan Teoh, chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor chapter, confirmed that it's still early to see race-specific bookings. However, he expects more inquiries and bookings as the Singapore race gets closer, particularly from those seeking value. He also pointed out that Johor Bahru is already experiencing strong demand for other August events, including Singapore's National Day celebrations and a friendly football match between Johor Darul Ta'zim and Chelsea on Aug. 9, which will further contribute to accommodation demand.

Usually, Formula One fans will try to stay in Singapore. But whenever Formula One is held there, hotel rates would skyrocket, and this would force fans to look at hotels in Johor Bahru, as they are much more affordable.
