Jeff Bezos-backed consortium buys 30% stake in FC Liverpool, with option for full control

Jeff Bezos could soon become a significant owner of FC Liverpool, with a consortium he backs acquiring a 30% stake in the club. The deal, confirmed just a day ago, reveals that the consortium, known as 1892 Holdings, holds an option to buy a controlling interest within the next year.

Sources familiar with the transaction confirmed the existence of this mechanism, which would allow 1892 Holdings to increase its ownership and take control of the English football giant. While this is not a commitment to a full takeover, it presents a clear possibility for the consortium to seize control.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) remains the majority owner for now, retaining control over the club. The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, with Bezos investing through his K5 Sports fund. Other investors include the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine.

If the consortium exercises its option, Bezos's first direct ownership in a major sports organization would rapidly evolve into a much more substantial deal. This scenario could also signal the end of FSG's more than 15-year tenure at the helm of Liverpool, which began when the American group acquired the club in 2010. The new agreement, however, suggests that 1892 Holdings has opened the door for a potential complete takeover of one of the world's most prominent football clubs.
