Jesus Christ Superstar premiere a bestseller at Erfurt's Domstufen-Festspiele

The rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" celebrated a triumphant premiere at the Domstufen-Festspiele in Erfurt, Germany. The production has achieved remarkable success, with nearly all 44,000 tickets for the open-air performances sold out through the end of August. Theater Erfurt reported that only waiting lists are available for the 21 scheduled shows, a phenomenon unprecedented in the festival's 32-year history.

The ensemble, led by Lukas Mayer in the title role, with Katja Bildt as Mary Magdalene and Til Ormeloh as Judas, delivered a powerful rock show against the backdrop of the Erfurt Cathedral and St. Severus Church. An assembled band accompanied the theater's orchestra in performing the classic musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, under the direction of Peter Lund.

The staging of the musical, which draws from the biblical account of Jesus Christ's final days, offered a contemporary interpretation. Jesus was depicted as being thrown from an arriving ambulance at the start of the performance. The production's theme, "Love Your Neighbor," was visually represented by the letters "Love" displayed on the Domstufen.
