Moritzburg Festival opens 34th season with Romantic German works

The Moritzburg Festival, a renowned chamber music event, has commenced its 34th season with a vibrant opening concert held on the north terrace of Moritzburg Castle. The program, titled "Elbe," exclusively featured works by German Romantic composers Carl Maria von Weber, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Saxony's State Parliament President Alexander Dierks, serving as the festival's patron, lauded the founders' pioneering spirit and optimism. He emphasized the festival's unique concept of uniting world-class soloists with young musical talents, stating that future excellence depends on today's established artists providing opportunities for the next generation.

Founded in 1993 by cellist Jan Vogler and his colleagues, the festival has transformed the picturesque location near Dresden into a global hub for chamber musicians. Inspired by the Marlboro Festival in the U.S., where participants present their work in concerts after intensive rehearsals, Moritzburg offers a similar platform.

In the retrospective, success always seems terribly self-evident; one no longer sees the effort behind establishing such a format.

This year's festival invites audiences on a "musical river journey" across continents. Twenty concerts will feature 26 musicians from various countries, exploring musical landscapes from the Neva and Elbe rivers to the Mississippi. The program includes French masters, American composers like Philip Glass and George Gershwin, and even Elvis Presley.

Parallel to the main festival, the 21st Moritzburg Festival Academy is underway, bringing together 41 young musicians from 19 nations. This academy orchestra, led by Spanish conductor Josep Caballé Domenech, will perform at Dresden's Kulturpalast and offer a musical picnic in the park of Proschwitz Castle.
