JI announces countrywide protest against petroleum levy on Sunday

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Pakistan has announced a series of nationwide protests, including sit-ins outside Governor Houses in Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar, and the Chief Minister House in Lahore. The demonstrations are set to take place on Sunday, beginning at 4 PM, as a direct response to the government's imposition of a levy on petroleum products and other taxes.

JI Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman stated that participants would march from different cities to converge at the designated protest sites. Addressing a press conference, Rehman emphasized that the party aims to peacefully convey the grievances of laborers, students, and other segments of society to the government. He highlighted the party's track record, noting that previous protests at 510 locations had proceeded without any damage to property.

Rehman issued a stern warning, suggesting that any attempt by the government to disrupt or interfere with the planned protests could transform the campaign for lower petrol prices into a broader movement aimed at ousting the government. The JI leader stressed the party's commitment to peaceful demonstration while signaling a readiness to escalate their actions if their demands are not met or if their right to protest is challenged.
