Jing Boran Wins Over Doubters in Brightest Spring

Jing Boran was not the obvious choice for Luо Nian, the cold, sharp-tongued creative director at the center of Brightest Spring. Yet after the series began airing, his portrayal helped turn early doubts into a surge of attention.

According to Sina, the drama is dominating China’s summer television race. It quickly passed 10,000 heat points on Youku and appeared on Netflix’s daily rankings in 54 countries and regions. Its popularity also lifted the main cast. Jing gained 331,000 followers, while discussions about Luо Nian passed 300 million on Douyin.

Brightest Spring adapts a novel of the same name and follows the romance between Luо Nian and Shang Zhi Tao, a young woman entering the corporate world. The novel presents Luо Nian as stylish, incisive, sarcastic and distant, but also deeply emotional and self-controlled. The role requires an actor to project the attraction of a mature man without turning him into an exaggerated corporate-romance archetype.

Before the show premiered, some readers questioned Jing’s casting. The role had previously been considered for Zhang Wanyi, who later left because of scheduling, and Peng Guanying, who many viewers considered a natural fit after his role as Liu Yifei’s lover in The Tale of Rose. Jing eventually accepted the part at 37, even though Luо Nian is 28 in the novel and is described as dangerous, seductive and sharp. Jing, by contrast, was often associated with a gentle, refined image.

The doubts eased once the series aired. Jing used limited heavy makeup to create a stronger, more rugged appearance. His Luо Nian speaks coldly and sharply, but controls his emotions, preserving the character’s distance while maintaining his appeal in the romance with Shang Zhi Tao. Jing, born in 1989, entered entertainment in 2007 after winning the national championship of the Super Boy competition. He was first known as a member of the group BoBo before focusing on acting.
