Jinshan's Summer-Exclusive 'Bong Huo Zai' to Feature Fish Leaping from Sea

Taiwan's unique "Bong Huo Zai" traditional fishing method, a rare spectacle where thousands of fish leap from the sea at night, will be presented on July 30 at Jinshan Beach.

The event, titled "Shimmering North Coast Jinshan Bong Huo Night," organized by the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration, promises a unique cultural experience. The highlight will be the "Bong Huo Exhibition," allowing visitors to witness the dramatic scene of golden sulfur fire illuminating the night and thousands of scaled fish jumping from the water. Explanations will be provided on the history and cultural significance of Jinshan's "Bong Huo Zai."

Adding to the allure, the "Xuan Wu Yan Troupe" will perform a visually stunning fire dance, illuminating the Jinshan night sky. The event also features a beach concert and a romantic market with local vendors, creating a pleasant beachside evening. To enhance visitor experience, organizers are offering free market vouchers and a lucky draw with prizes like hot spring hotel stays and "Bong Huo" experience tickets.

The "Bong Huo Zai" technique, passed down for centuries along Taiwan's coast, gets its name from the "Bong" sound made when the sulfur fire ignites, attracting schools of fish. Currently, Jinshan is the only place where this traditional fishing method can be observed, making it a valuable cultural asset that has been transformed into a distinctive tourist attraction. The administration is also promoting "Summer Night Bong Huo Zai" themed tours and a photo contest to capture the event's beauty.
