Jonas Vingegaard says he 'would love to see' Piganzoli in the best young rider jersey

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard has indicated his support for teammate Davide Piganzoli to secure the best young rider classification at the Giro d'Italia. After retaining the maglia rosa following the eighteenth stage, Vingegaard shared his thoughts on the team''s immediate objectives.

"Honestly, we take it day by day. I haven't spoken with our directors yet. First, we focus on today, tomorrow I will give a better answer. We have Davide [Piganzoli], who is close in the classification of the young riders, and I would love to see him with that jersey," Vingegaard stated. He acknowledged Piganzoli's strong performance as a domestique in the high mountain stages.

Piganzoli currently sits second in the young rider standings, trailing Afonso Eulálio by 2 minutes and 17 seconds. Vingegaard himself had a successful day, being the first to crest the challenging Ca' del Poggio climb. He described the atmosphere as "great" with "lots of people," sensing the significance of the moment.

Vingegaard also touched upon the Visma team's inherent ambition, stating it's "in the DNA of the team." He highlighted the team's long-standing goal of building a squad capable of competing in Grand Tours, a feat they have proven possible with multiple Grand Tour winners. He expressed hope that Piganzoli could be the next to achieve such success with the team.
