Jonava resident charged with attempted murder of police officer

A resident of Jonava is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to murder a police officer. The incident occurred when officers responded to a report of a dangerous individual on Saturday evening. The suspect, who was intoxicated, reportedly threatened the officers and fired his weapon at least three times, striking and damaging an official police vehicle.

Prosecutors stated that the suspect's actions suggest an attempt to kill a public servant due to their official duties. If convicted, the suspect faces a prison sentence ranging from eight to twenty years, or life imprisonment. This individual has a history of four previous convictions, although these are no longer officially on record.

The prosecutor leading the pre-trial investigation has requested the Kaunas District Court to impose the strictest pre-trial detention measure: three months of arrest. The request is based on the belief that the suspect may flee or hide from investigators, prosecutors, or the court, and could obstruct the ongoing investigation.
