Journalist Describes Harrowing Escape from Omiš Wildfire: 'Ten Minutes to Flee'

A journalist has recounted the terrifying moments of escaping a wildfire near Omiš, Croatia, describing how she and other residents had only about ten minutes from spotting the smoke to fleeing their homes. Lana Kovačević was in a house approximately 500 meters from where the fire started.

Initially, the severity of the situation was not apparent. "At first, we didn't even notice it was burning. Tourists noticed and asked if this was normal," Kovačević told Petra Balija, an editor of video content. However, the situation escalated rapidly. "In those ten minutes, you don't have many options or time," she said, describing how tourists staying in the area immediately got into their cars and fled towards Omiš.

During the evacuation, Kovačević managed to grab only the most essential items: her documents, mobile phone with charger, wallet, and a bottle of water, along with a jacket. She noted a lack of panic among people, who were focused on leaving the area quickly. Others on the road offered rides to those stranded, creating a sense of urgency and mutual aid.

All the tourists staying in the facility immediately got into cars and started fleeing towards Omiš.

The rapid spread of the fire was attributed to the extremely wooded terrain, abundant pine trees, and dry undergrowth, exacerbated by strong winds. Upon reaching Omiš, Kovačević observed that many locals initially seemed unaware of the fire's proximity and potential threat.

However, as smoke and flames became visible, emergency services quickly organized reception centers for the evacuees. Kovačević highlighted the swift response of the services, which provided assistance, including water, and inquired about any necessary medications for both tourists and local residents, including many children. Transport was initially provided by vans, followed by buses from Split.
