Judge notes Roche's 'appalling' behaviour at sentencing

A judge has highlighted the "appalling" and disruptive conduct of Wayne Roche, a man convicted of murder, which continued until his sentencing hearing. Mr. Justice Patrick McGrath contrasted Roche's behavior with the "patience and dignity" displayed by the family of the victim, John O'Connor. Roche was found guilty last month by a jury of murdering O'Connor, 58, who was discovered with extensive blunt force injuries after drinking with Roche. Roche, 36, had pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. The court heard that Roche and O'Connor's daughter were expecting a child. Mr. Justice McGrath handed down a mandatory life sentence, noting O'Connor had over 100 injuries and "effectively bled to death from a savage beating." The judge also stated Roche repeatedly lied after the event, attempting to blame an innocent friend of the victim. Roche claimed he could not remember the events due to drug use, but the jury rejected this. "The appalling behaviour of the accused during the trial persisted to today's date," Mr. Justice McGrath said, citing interruptions, threats to dismiss lawyers, and disruptions during the prosecution's closing speech. Roche's behavior continued during the sentencing hearing, with him leaving and returning to court. The judge observed this as a pattern since the case began, contrasting it with the victim's family's demeanor. "I can only commend the family for the manner they dealt with these provocations on the part of Wayne Roche," he added. The judge also pointed out Roche's significant criminal history.
