Juju singer Saint Janet had difficulty breathing before death, children recount

Veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, known as Saint Janet, died shortly after experiencing chest pain and difficulty breathing, her children revealed in an interview with Alore TV.

She performed the previous night. People even celebrated her with applause. We did not suspect anything. After the show, we came home and slept. The show was overnight.

According to her daughter Omowunmi, Saint Janet performed at an overnight show in Sango, Ogun State, and appeared healthy. The following day, she visited the market and returned home around 6 p.m. Despite seeming normal, she insisted on cooking and later held her chest, reporting irregular breathing.

After she finished cooking, she checked around the house to see if there was anything else for her to do. I later noticed she was holding her chest. She said she felt like something wanted to drop off her chest. Her breathing was no longer regular.

Omowunmi stated that her uncle and siblings took the singer to the hospital. "It was not up to 10 minutes that she was admitted and was given oxygen," she said. Her son, Orinayo, added that medical personnel attended to her immediately, but she passed away while they were checking for a pulse.

It was my uncle and my three other siblings that took her to the hospital. They said when they got to the hospital, it was not up to 10 minutes that she was admitted and was given oxygen.

Another daughter, Fola, confirmed her mother complained of chest pain and was not visibly sick. Saint Janet's manager also corroborated that she showed no signs of illness during her final performance. The family has begun burial arrangements, with a nine-day prayer program underway and the funeral scheduled for August 25-26.
