Justice Minister Gürlek: Perpetrators of forest fires will be brought to justice

Turkey's Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek, has vowed that individuals responsible for forest fires will face legal consequences, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting the nation's natural resources.

Minister Gürlek stated that the meticulous investigation of forest fires is a priority, extending beyond crimes against citizens to include the preservation of forests and natural assets, referred to as the "Green Homeland."

Our 'Green Homeland' is a common trust of our nation and the right of our future generations. In the coming period, the close cooperation between our chief public prosecutor's offices and our law enforcement units will be resolutely continued.

He reported that since June 1, 2026, authorities have investigated 44 forest fires across 16 provinces. These investigations have identified 29 suspects. As a result, six individuals have been arrested, nine are subject to judicial control measures, and six remain in custody pending further proceedings.

Gürlek assured that no suspected arson cases will go unsolved. He warned those who intentionally set fires or cause them through negligence that their actions will not go unpunished. The ministry is coordinating closely with law enforcement and prosecution offices to ensure all evidence is collected and perpetrators are brought before justice to face the full extent of the law.
