Jusuf Kalla Criticizes Aceh Riots, Urges Peace Preservation

Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia's former Vice President and a key figure in the Aceh peace process, has voiced concern over riots that erupted in Banda Aceh during the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of the Aceh peace agreement.

Kalla observed that the disturbances, which occurred on August 15, 2026, do not represent the sentiment of the majority of Aceh's population, who have benefited from the peace established by the 2005 Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding. He emphasized that the anniversary should be a time to reflect on the successful resolution of a long-standing conflict through peaceful means.

Witnesses reported that a gathering for prayers and remembrance at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque was disrupted by an anarchist mob. Security forces, comprising TNI and Polri, intervened to disperse the crowd. Kalla noted that authorities attempted to prevent the situation from escalating into open conflict, particularly concerning the display of certain flags.

According to Kalla, the issue appears to be rooted in internal group dynamics within Aceh, rather than a protest against the central government. He suggested that certain dissatisfied groups, though perhaps small, may have instigated the unrest. "This is an expression of displeasure and the lingering desires of some groups, even if small, that can provoke the public there," Kalla stated.
