JYP Claims Tampere Cup Title, HIFK Shut Out by Ilves

JYP has won the traditional Tampere Cup ice hockey tournament, defeating Tappara 2-1 in the final held at the Hakametsä ice rink in Tampere. The decisive goal came from Valtteri Ojantakanen, who found the back of the net just over five minutes before the end of the third period.

Earlier in the game, Leevi Tukiainen had opened the scoring for JYP in the second period. Tappara managed to equalize before the period concluded, with Michael Lindqvist scoring for the home team. However, Ojantakanen's late goal sealed the victory for JYP, assisted by Otto Jaatinen.

In the bronze medal match, Ilves emerged victorious over HIFK in a penalty shootout, with Matic Török scoring the sole goal. The regulation game had ended in a 0-0 tie, highlighting a tight defensive battle.

Both JYP and Tappara had advanced to the final after winning their respective semifinal matches on Friday. JYP defeated HIFK 5-3, while Tappara narrowly beat Ilves 3-2 in overtime. The new Finnish SM-liiga season is set to commence on Tuesday, September 1.
