Kaduna emir seeks constitutional backing for monarchs

In Nigeria, the traditional institution, deeply rooted in the nation's history, continues to play a vital role in community life. The Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has voiced a sentiment shared by many traditional leaders: the need for constitutional recognition and empowerment. Speaking at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Week in Kaduna, the Emir highlighted that while these institutions are crucial for peacebuilding, grassroots development, and conflict mediation, their potential remains underutilized due to a lack of clear legal frameworks.

The roles of traditional rulers are underutilised, and therefore, there should be constitutional backing for their roles so that they can function efficiently.

His call for constitutional backing is not merely about prestige; it's about enabling traditional rulers to function more effectively in contemporary governance. The Emir pointed out that the traditional system in Northern Nigeria predates colonial rule and has historically served as a stabilizing force. He urged fellow traditional rulers to actively promote peaceful coexistence and combat the spread of violence and hate speech, underscoring their influence in shaping community values and security.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, through his Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sadeeq Maman-Lagos, responded positively to the Emir's call. The governor acknowledged the strategic importance of traditional rulers in security management and grassroots development, promising increased inclusion in governance. This assurance reflects a recognition, particularly within Nigeria, that effective governance at the local level often requires leveraging existing community structures and the trust placed in traditional leaders. The commissioner's statement that any government ignoring traditional rulers is "wasting time" powerfully illustrates this local perspective, emphasizing that these leaders possess intimate knowledge of their communities' needs and dynamics.
