Wike Urges PDP NWC to Reclaim Defectors, Strengthen Opposition Role

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a strong call to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging them to actively work towards reclaiming defected members and solidifying the party's position as a robust opposition. Speaking during a courtesy visit to the PDP headquarters in Abuja, Wike emphasized the PDP's status as the nation's principal opposition party, directly challenging any other political group's claim to that title.

After the judgment of the Federal High Court that directed that the police should vacate and give you protection for you to resume activities in the official building of the Peoples Democratic Party, I can see the work that has taken place. That shows that you are ready to kick-start daily activities. Let me also congratulate you on taking that bold initiative.

Wike's remarks underscored the importance of electoral success in defining a party's opposition standing. He pointedly stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) cannot claim to be the leading opposition because it has not achieved significant electoral victories, even failing to win a single councilorship in the Abuja Municipal Area Council election. This stance highlights a critical perspective within Nigerian politics: that genuine opposition status is earned through demonstrated electoral performance, not mere assertion.

My coming here this morning is to reassure you of my support for the members of the National Working Committee. Yes, elections have been held. After elections, you will need the support of every party member, morally and otherwise. And so, I’ve come here to pledge my support and my loyalty to all of you.

He recognized that rebuilding the PDP after a period of crisis requires considerable effort and sacrifice. However, he conveyed confidence in the NWC's ability to guide the party back to its former prominence, drawing on the experience of seasoned party members.
