Kaja Kallas arrives in Lithuania

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas arrived in Lithuania on Monday for a two-day official visit, with talks scheduled on the country’s upcoming presidency of the EU Council and regional security.

On the first day, Kallas is due to meet President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius and Lithuania’s professional diplomatic network. On Tuesday, she will continue talks with parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas, lawmakers and the heads of the Defence and Foreign Affairs ministries, Robertas Kaunas and Kęstutis Budrys.

The discussions are expected to address Lithuania’s preparations to lead the EU Council, support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, security and defence, and other issues. Kallas will also meet the rector of Vilnius University, take part in the annual gathering of Lithuanian heads of diplomatic missions and join a discussion with university students.

Her programme includes a visit to the Lithuania-Belarus border. Lithuania will hold the rotating EU Council presidency in the first half of 2027, taking over from Ireland and later handing it to Greece. The three countries form an 18-month presidency trio.
