Kalimantan Governor Sets Up Oxygen Houses and Distributes Free Masks to Fight Wildfire Smoke

Central Kalimantan is setting up emergency oxygen stations as wildfire smoke raises fears about breathing problems, particularly among children, older people and other vulnerable residents. Governor Agustiar Sabran announced the measures on August 31, 2026, alongside a free mask distribution campaign.

The stations, known as “Oxygen Houses,” will provide oxygen, nebulizers, medical staff and temporary rest areas for residents suffering shortness of breath after exposure to smoke. “When the air feels heavy, our task is to ensure that no resident feels alone. The government must be present, embrace people and protect them,” Agustiar said.

The provincial government has also sent teams to distribute thousands of masks at schools, markets, terminals and residential areas. Civil servants, volunteers and health workers are carrying out the distribution. “We are not distributing masks merely as a symbol. This is the most basic form of protection. If we cannot stop the smoke today, at least we can protect people’s lungs today,” the governor said.

Agustiar asked regional heads, subdistrict chiefs and village heads to identify residents with underlying conditions such as asthma and acute respiratory infections. Those residents will receive priority access to the Oxygen Houses and follow-up health assistance. “We are moving quickly because time cannot wait. Once the air-quality index falls, our teams must already be in the field. This is not about bureaucracy. This is about lives,” he said.

The province is coordinating with its health agency, Indonesia’s disaster management agency, the meteorological agency, the military and police, community organizations and universities. Agustiar also urged residents to reduce outdoor activity, wear masks and drink plenty of water, while thanking health workers and volunteers for working under difficult conditions.
