Kano electorate condemn Yusuf’s land allocation, N100m gift to APC polling units

Kano residents and voters are expressing strong disapproval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's recent decision to allocate 1,540 plots of land and N100 million to leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Polling Units Association, known as Yan’akwati.

I’m not happy with the recent distribution of plots of land and money to leaders of APC polling unit supporters. Does land in Kano belong to only APC supporters or members?

Many residents voiced disappointment, highlighting the stark contrast between this distribution of state resources and the widespread poverty and collapsed facilities affecting millions in Kano. They argue that the governor's action is discriminatory, favoring party supporters over the general populace, regardless of class or affiliation.

Land is owned by the state and the governor only holds it in trust for the residents. As such, every indigene of Kano irrespective of his or her party inclination has the right over land in the state

Resident Ado Bala questioned the equity of the land distribution, stating that land in Kano belongs to all residents, not just APC supporters. He characterized the governor's action as a clear demonstration of selfishness and a disregard for the rights of other state residents. Another resident, Shehu, suggested the governor needs to reconsider the allocation, calling it a display of favoritism and potentially a result of poor advice.

Concerns were also raised that this move could be interpreted as vote-buying in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. Aisha Hassan, a resident, urged Governor Yusuf to extend similar gestures to non-APC supporters to avoid public criticism. She advised political officeholders to act fairly and justly to earn a positive legacy.
