Kanu’s Lawyer Threatens Lawsuit Over TV Comment

The lead counsel for detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has threatened legal action over a public call for his client's alleged extrajudicial killing. Lawyer Aloy Ejimakor condemned a remark reportedly made by Chigozie Nnabugwu during a News Central Television program, stating it was dangerous and unlawful.

According to Ejimakor, Nnabugwu allegedly urged the Nigerian government to kill Kanu to restore normalcy to the South-East region. The comment, aired on July 19 and shared on the television station's verified X handle, has drawn significant attention. Ejimakor described the statement as "reckless, irresponsible and unlawful," arguing that advocating for the killing of a citizen whose case is pending in court attacks the rule of law and due process.

Ejimakor emphasized that such a remark could endanger Kanu's life, incite violence, and disrupt public peace. He believes the statement may violate Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which criminalizes electronic messages that threaten life or cause a breakdown of law and order, carrying penalties of fines, imprisonment, or both. The lawyer also noted potential liability under other laws related to incitement.

The lawyer faulted News Central Television for airing the remark, stressing media responsibility to prevent the spread of content promoting violence or unlawful acts. He warned that broadcasters providing platforms for hate speech or calls for violence could face regulatory scrutiny. Ejimakor further argued that advocating for a citizen's killing during ongoing judicial proceedings could constitute interference with the administration of justice. Kanu's legal team is reviewing options, including petitions to regulatory and law enforcement agencies, and demands an immediate retraction and public apology from the individual and the station, respectively, warning of legal proceedings if unmet.
